Clocks go back on Sunday, November 1, 2026

At 2 AM on Sunday, November 1, 2026, clocks go back one hour to 1 AM in most of eastern Canada and most of the US. You get an extra hour that night.

This year it isn't the whole country. British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba made their last clock change on March 8, 2026 and are staying on the time they're on now, and so is the Northwest Territories.

Who goes back an hour on November 1

Most of Ontario and Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nunavut, and every US state except Hawaii and most of Arizona.

Who doesn't change

British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories, which stopped changing their clocks this year. Saskatchewan, Yukon, Hawaii and most of Arizona already didn't change.

If you're in BC, Alberta or Manitoba, check your phone, laptop and any smart clocks on Sunday morning. A device that hasn't had a software update since the change can still go back an hour on its own. If one did, update it or set the time by hand.

What the mornings look like

Sunrise by the clock, the day before the change, the day of, and on December 21:

City Sat Oct 31 Sun Nov 1 Mon Dec 21
Toronto 7:52 AM 6:54 AM 7:48 AM
Ottawa 7:41 AM 6:42 AM 7:40 AM
Montreal 7:33 AM 6:34 AM 7:31 AM
Halifax 7:51 AM 6:52 AM 7:48 AM
St. John's 7:43 AM 6:45 AM 7:46 AM
New York 7:25 AM 6:26 AM 7:17 AM
Chicago 7:22 AM 6:23 AM 7:15 AM
Los Angeles 7:12 AM 6:13 AM 6:55 AM
Winnipeg 8:17 AM 8:18 AM 9:24 AM
Calgary 8:27 AM 8:29 AM 9:37 AM
Edmonton 8:32 AM 8:34 AM 9:48 AM
Vancouver 7:59 AM 8:01 AM 9:05 AM

Where the clocks change, sunrise jumps an hour earlier overnight. If you get up at 7, it's already light out the first week of November, and your bedroom is too unless the window is covered.

Where they don't change, the mornings keep getting darker into December. Sunrise in Edmonton on December 21 is 9:48 AM, and in Vancouver it's 9:05 AM.

These times come from our sunrise calculator, where you can check your own city and see how much daylight lands in your sleep hours.

Getting through the change

The night of the change, your body is still on the old time, so 7 AM on the new clock feels like 8 AM did the day before.

If you'd rather move in steps, go to bed 15 minutes later each night for the four nights before, starting Wednesday, October 28. By Saturday you're an hour later, which lines up with the new clock.

Change the clocks that don't update themselves before bed on Saturday, the oven, the microwave, the car, the alarm clock and any wall clocks.

If the early light wakes you before you want, cover the glass. Our Blackout Blind holds onto the glass with suction cups and starts at C$44.99.

The next change

In the places that still change, clocks go forward an hour at 2 AM on Sunday, March 14, 2027.
